Over the years, I have tried many different biltong spices, and in my humble opinion, these five stand out from the rest.
For those who don’t know what biltong is, it’s a dried meat product from South Africa. It’s like jerky but better (in my opinion).
Biltong takes many forms, including beef biltong, game biltong and ostrich biltong.
Freddy Hirsch is one of the leading biltong spice suppliers in the world.
Freddie Hirsch biltong spices are all handmade within Cape Town itself, in small batches, to ensure each batch of spice is as fresh as possible.
Check out their Hunters Chilli Biltong Seasoning, Kalahari Biltong Spice, Jagveld Biltong Spice Blend.
They do many spice blends, but I have chosen to look at the Kalahari, Original and Hunters biltong spices for this review.
Freddy Hirsch Kalahari Biltong Spice is one of the most popular biltong spices with a fantastic taste suited to all varieties of meat, from beef to game and ostrich. It contains no less than 16 different flavours:
Garlic, onion, pepper, oregano, coriander, parsley, ginger, nutmeg, mace cardamom and cinnamon are just some of the ingredients which make up this delicious biltong spice.
The reason this spice mix works so well is due precisely to its wide variety of ingredients.
I’ve tried a few of the different flavours of Freddie Hirsch, and I must say that Freddy Hirsch Original Biltong Spice is by far my favourite.
It has a rich and flavourful taste, and I have never had any problems with it.
Freddy Hirsch Hunters Biltong Spice is a beef flavoured biltong spice with top coriander and black pepper notes.
It makes inexpensive cuts, even those from supermarkets, not matured- taste so, so good. The coriander and pepper notes make it quite different from others on the market.
Crown National Safari Biltong spice, is also imported from South Africa, and it is also a fantastic seasoning you can buy on Amazon UK for biltong.
The blend is not that different from other brands due to its quality ingredients and flavourful kick.
Lastly, if you want to make your biltong spice from scratch, the base ingredients are straightforward.
Use one-third of salt, black pepper and crushed roasted coriander. These three spices alone are all you need to make a batch of delicious biltong.
You can experiment with the flavour by adding chilli flakes, onion powder or even garlic powder.
Whether you decide to use Worcestershire sauce or vinegar or even the type of vinegar will change the taste profile of your final product.
The best part about making biltong is to play around until you find that perfect recipe.
I hope you guys will have fun.
