Spice Up Your Mielie pap with a Classic SA Relish!

This tomato and onion relish is a classic South African condiment, often served with mielie pap.

It is a great way to add a bit of flavour to your meal and is also incredibly easy to make.

To make the relish, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 unflavored tin of canned tomatoes
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped (Optional)
  • 2 tablespoons of avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons of red wine
  • 2 tablespoons of apricot jam
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

Recipe

First, heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they are softened about 5 minutes. Then add the tomatoes and garlic and cook for another 5 minutes.

Next, add the wine, apricot jam, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook for another 5 minutes. The relish should be thick and fragrant.

Remove the relish from the heat and let it cool. Once cooled, you can transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days if needed.

To serve, spoon the relish onto a plate and serve alongside mielie pap or as a condiment for other dishes. Enjoy!
